Sorry, but robbery is too strong a word for it. No one used a weapon to force him to give up money. No one put a hand in his pocket to steal his wallet, either.

Exchange places exist to make money on tourists. If they couldn't do that they'd soon stop existing. As a tourist your defense is to walk away and get your money some other way. An ATM is usually a much cheaper alternative, although that depends on what extra fees the card issuer charges.

This sort of thing will continue as long as the governments of the world allows banks and other exchange places to add on whatever fees they want. And it is extremely unlikely that you will be able to get every government in the world to agree on a law about this.

Sorry, dumb article. Everyone knows airport currency exchange is not the best way to get the job done.

Only get currency from an ATM at airport that is connected to a Bank not a currency exchange.

Not absolutely 100% true everywhere. For instance in most UK airports there are no longer any bank ATMs -- only Travelex. BUT they are fine to use because Travelex's contract w/ BAA precludes adding any fees, etc so exactly the same as using a bank-affiliated machine

(the Travelex currency exchange booths are totally different - they tack on large fees)
