Yellow Fever Vaccine??
 

I read an old thread indicating that we might need proof of a YF vaccine if entering Uruguay from BA. Someone also suggested no way do you they demand this of every traveler entering Uruguay...Does anyone know if we absolutely must have proof of this vaccine before entering Uru from BA?

We are only spending a few leisure days in BA before entering Uru and will not be exposed to YF.

Argentina is a YF country

with frquent epidemics in the North around Iguazu.

so in theory the officer is

within rights to require the YF/jab/cert

In practice it usually does not happen to day visitors

entering from BsAs.

If you will be in the North of Argentina YF is suggested.

Thank you for your input. Our dilemma is that we do not want to plan our trip to Uru and then get denied upon arrival...I guess we try our luck. I was on CDC website and Argentina was not highlighted as YF country. If I recall the areas that border Brazil/Iguazu were not even highlighted which I found surprising and more confusing...

When we crossed the border into Uruguay at Concordia, the immigration guy baely looked at our passports. We did have YF certs stapled insude but he did not inspect them and didn't ask any questions. It was a v.small border crossing and it was6.30am. Technically, it is required and you could be refused entry. When we were in Africa this was a common means of earning extra $$ for the border guards but I doubt that this would be the case in Uruguay. If you do a lot of travel, why not get the shot? It may seem expensive but it lasts for ten years (and YF is not a pleasant disease to get !)

I flew from Paraguay (known to have problems with yellow fever) to Uruguay last year. I had my yellow fever certificate with me. I keep up to date. No one asked to see it when I arrived in Uruguay.

CDC does list Argentina as a yellow fever country, but the map shades in only the area around Iguazu. Call this a hunch and don't take my word for it, but when you consider that Argentina supplies more tourists to Uruguay than any other country, I can't believe that all those visitors have been immunized against yellow fever.

Go online and get the number for Uruguay's embassy in Washington and call them and ask. They would have the definitive answer.

The travel clinic nurse told me that YF is almost always deadly. Once you get the shot you will have 10 years of immunity. Why not just get the shot?

It's expensive and may not be recommended for anyone aged 60 years and over, as it contains a live virus.
