Yellow Fever Vaccinations
 

We are traveling from Lima to Quito and were wondering if we needed to have a yellow fever shot. According to the CDC we do not, but according to one guide book you do. What is the scope?

Peru and Ecuador crossing borders and they RARELY

medically you only need it if you go to the deep jungles

$20 for me last. You can tell clinics you are allergic to

eggs and they will give you the waiver that will work also

No, you don't need YF vax for Quito or Guayaquil or Galapagos. I've been there couple times and mosquitos are not a problem.

The question isn't whether you might catch yellow fever. The question is whether Ecuador is going to ask to see the yellow fever card when you come from Peru, a country which as an endemic risk of YF (same as Ecuador, btw).

According to the CDC 2012 Yellow Book, Ecuador would require it if coming from Peru. But whether they ask for it in practice, I don't know.

I've been trying to find out the same thing. Really don't want to get a shot we don't need, but also don't want to be denied entry into Ecuador!

As an fyi, I e-mailed the U.S. consulate in Guayaquil about this and got the following reply. It's still kind of vague if we should bother getting the shot. Would rather not spend $260 and get shots we don't need.


"We’ve had this question a few times over the last few months. The Ecuadorian law states that if you are arriving from a country where yellow fever is present anywhere in that country then they will require a yellow fever certificate. That said, we travel frequently between Lima and have never been asked for a yellow fever certificate (though we have all been vaccinated and could present the documentation if asked), nor have I ever heard of American travelers being denied entry for lacking a yellow fever certificate. I think you are pretty safe traveling without it if you don’t feel comfortable getting the vaccination, but given that laws here are enforced unevenly, there is always the chance for an official to decide to crack down at any moment. I’m sorry we can’t give you a more clear-cut yes/no answer—such are the perils of traveling to the developing world! Enjoy your trip—Machu Picchu is incredible."
