woman solo traveling Colombia

Hi,

I'm a 30 year old woman, planning to visit South America (for the first time) for 5 weeks starting in July.

I have been going back and forth for weeks now on where to go, regarding weather, safety and malaria, as well.
My biggest concerns are theft (armed, especially), guerilla groups (especially BACRIM), current flooding and the looming eruption of Nevado de Ruiz.
Also, I've heard I should stay clear of the mountains due to guerilla groups. Is this true? Are there any safe areas to go for beautiful hikes/trekking tours?

Comments, thoughts, opinions on any of the above matters? Would be very much appreciated!

I have heard such incredible things about Colombia that I still would very much like to go, but with all of the above issues, I admit I'm nervous. Would Peru be a better option for a female traveling around?

Thanks in advance!

Thanks for this encouraging response! :) Are you working for colombia eco travel?

Another more specific question, I would love to spend some time - hiking and relaxing - in the coffee plantations region near Armenia. But I am concerned about the current situation with the volcano Nevado del Ruiz (should erupt SOON). are there areas that are far enough away from the volcano to assure safety, but are still beautiful in that region?

thanks!

Here is a link to the British Foreign office page on travel to Columbia. Provides quite a bit of detail/advice

Hello Afleur,

Yes, I founded Colombia Eco Travel, but there's great information there for you to see.

The volcano is not an issue really. Manizales had some ash for about a week and it's all back to normal now.

I can recommend some great fincas all over the coffee region. I guess it depends on your budget, since there are some that are for budget travelers and others for luxury travelers.

Let me know if you need details.

Hopes that helps!

Daniel
