Where to stay in Patagonia?

Looking to spend 10-12 days in Argentina/Chile starting in Buenos Aires. I like the idea of going to El Calafate or further south but everything is a flight + car ride. What are easier/convenient places to stay/itineraries for luxury resorts that emphasize some active/adventure activities? Have heard Llao Llao, Los Charros etc.. Was thinking 4 nights B.A... then either Uruguay (Four Seasons Carmelo) or Mendoza (Park Hyatt seems better value than Cavas or Vines) and then 4-5 nights in Patgonia. All the flights are through B.A so it doesnt really matter where you are prior, you have to fly back into B.A. Thanks vm

Since you specify "luxury" accomodations, I'd suggest the Alvear in BA, the Llao-Llao in Bariloche and Los Notros in El Calafate. For the last two locations, you need to rent a car.

Have a great time in our country, nwpumacats.

Thanks - what is the difference between Bariloche and El Calafate... seems like going all the way further south not necessarily worth the extra transportation to get there...

Bariloche is about the lakes, while El Calafate is about the glaciers. Quite different.

I agree. Bariloche and El Calafate are very different. El Calafate is much more extreme. In BA there are endless luxury hotels to choose from. And remember, down south, you can drive from El Calafate to Cerro Castillo that gets you into Chile and from there Torres del Paine Park is very close. And if you stay at a high end property like Explora or Tierra Patagonia they can help you arrange the transportation from El Calafate.
