Where to stay in Bariloche
 

Hi there Fodorites,

Does anyone have any recommendations on where to stay in Bariloche. Finding somewhere that looks great isn't actually that difficult, but I am after advice on area in particular. We will be there for five nights in mid November and won't have a car. We will be coming from El Calafate before heading on to Iguazu. I am thinking the town centre will be easiest because we want to be able to get to cafes, restaurants and activities easily. But I know that people say staying out of town is more beautiful. My quandary is travelling in to access things each day without a car. And if we do stay in the town, does anyone have any suggestions on which place?

We didn't stay in town and I'm glad. Taking the bus into town was easy.

Thanks yestravel. Can you let me know where you would recommend and if the bus came past where you were? How long did this take? Can you tell me what it was that made you glad not to stay in town?

We stayed here, https://www.booking.com/hotel/ar/los...ake-house.html. Nice little BnB. There was a bus stop right out front. It took maybe 15 minutes or so to get to the downtown. I think there are lots of places outside of downtown. Bariloche was not my favorite place in Arg. I didn't find it oarticularly interesting or charming. The Lake area is lovely and though. Thanks yestravel. It looks as though you enjoyed San Martin more. I did think about going there but because we won't have a car and will have already gone from El Chalten to the airport at El Calafate to fly to Bariloche I didn't fancy another long bus trip to San Martin.

I stayed in town and since I had a room with a lake view and could walk to restaurants I thought it was a good choice. I stayed at the Hotel Tirol, which was a lucky find as my booked room was a dump and the town was crowded.

Your hotel looks good. I can't work out if the price displayed is US$ or ARG$. You say there is not a lot to see in Bariloche. We will have 5 nights and have planned that for some rest and relaxation after hiking the W Trek and then several days of hiking at El Chalten. Do you think this is the place for it?

Yes, good place for R&R. The views are gorgeous and you can take some trips on the lake. Be sure to go up the mountains.

If you check availability on the hotel website and tell it English it shows the price in USD. Or you can check booking.com. It seems to have gone up a good bit, but I negotiated it in person the night before checking in.

Thanks. It looks to cost around $US500 for five nights, which is more than $AUD600 - we Australians always pay more! But I think that price looks reasonable compared to what we have to pay here generally.

Does anyone recommend any good tour operators for boats or other activities? We would arrange our own walks up the mouuntains - as long as I can walk after all the hiking I will have been doing! I know it will be a crowded city so anything that has a bit of local authenticity about it would be good.
