Walking sticks for Machu Picchu?
We will need walking sticks for Machu Picchu but what we have doesn't fit into our suitcase. Are they easily purchased on site? any idea of cost?
|
If you're going to buy anyway, why not buy lightweight folding trekking poles before you go?
|
Hiking/trekking sticks, like tripods, are not allowed in Machu Picchu because they can cause damage to the terrain. This is randomly enforced but makes sense. If you have one stick with rubber tip you would probably not be bothered by anyone. If you are doing the Inca Trail, you can use sticks until you get to the Sun Gate. Then they need to be stored.

Folding Trekking poles are expensive at REI. We've heard they are available in Machu Picchu and cheap..so wondered if anyone had purchased them there? we are not doing the Inca Trail. Not something we would ever use again.
|
We bought our telescopic walking polesfor use on the Lares trek in one of the outdoor shops in Cuzco, just off the plaza de arm as. Can't recall the cost be I do remember thinking they were a lot cheaper than I expected.

Have you considered NOT looking at REI but a cheaper/mass market source.
Since you are not using them for trekking, probably anything will do and if you lose them it won't hurt as much. Another option if you just need it for stability is a collapsible cane which you won't have to worry about being allowed inside. |
I repeat from my post above, trekking poles are not allowed in Machu Picchu.
|
If you are elderly, disabled, etc, they are going to allow them. They should have a rubber tip. Bring a doctor's note if you don't appear to fit those descriptions.
As I said, a cane would be less likely to raise eyebrows. |
You can rent them from a lot of the agencies.

thank you all for your help.

I'll be in Peru next week but just received my collapsible/adjustable height poles from Amazon. We bought Vorosy brand poles. Each pole is $19.95, weighs about 8oz and collapses to about 14 inches.with a rubber tip. Each comes in its own mesh case. Just opened them today to check them out and they seem sturdy and well made.
