Volcano erupts in Chile near Puerto Varas and Puerto Montt

No reported deaths and only ash so far. Also learned on the same link that Villarica, near Pucon, erupted recently.

I visited all three towns in 2012 and hope that these are one off events and everyone stays safe.

Certainly scary, and hopefully there isn't much damage, but amazing photos:

The airport at Puerto Montt is closed, as is the airport in Bariloche. If you have a flight pending, contact the airline for rescheduling. The land border at Cardenal Samoré is also closed.

Spectacular pictures. I too was there one year ago.

A "before" photo when we were in Puerto Varas

Elizabeth_S, that appears to be a photo of the Osorno volcano, not Calbuco.

Huentetu - you're right - thank you. Will post the proper picture shortly.

Wow, those pictures are a-mazing! I see the ash is reaching Bariloche in Argentina. There was still ash on the hiking trails there from a different volcano in 2012.

mlgb Apr 23rd, 2015 01:20 PM

Wow is right.

Incredible photos. Good that there are no reported deaths but it looks like the lives of the people in the region are going severly affected for some time to come.

thursdaysd Apr 23rd, 2015 03:50 PM

More links. Apparently the ash may reach as far as Buenos Aires!

This is my favourite.

Sorry. I thought it was just the picture, not the blokes talking.... :(

Cool set!

NoFlyZone Apr 24th, 2015 05:11 AM

Wow. I booked flights to Puerto Montt on Wednesday!

Huentetu Apr 24th, 2015 05:17 AM

In the BBC link they speak of 500 volcanoes with the possibility of eruption. In fact the list is of about 90, 45 of which are permanently monitored and stretch from the far north to the far south. Calbuco is #3 on the list, so not the surprise that Chaiten was. Despite monitoring, there were only minor indications of activity on Calbuco a couple of days before.

@NoFlyZone - oh no!

Where are you flying from? I don't see a SA thread in your profile.

Huentetu Apr 24th, 2015 12:54 PM

Flights south from Santiago have been resuming today. Contact your airline and see what the status of your flight is.
