travel insurance
I am considering how to buy travel insurance for my 18 year son who is travelling to Peru with his school. If this trips gets cancelled we will get our money back from the travel agent. However if I have purchased a travel insurance policy to cover "cancel for any reason" the cost will be significant and a loss ? What is our best option ? Just buy the cheapest policy and hope for the best ?

When we go on far-flung adventures, we buy insurance for the medical evacuation. We figure we can afford the loss of money for most trips, but what if we were injured or got very sick? So we choose a fairly basic package (which usually gives us some trip cancellation or trip interruption benefits) that includes decent emergency medical care and medical evacuation. Perhaps the school package includes those.

I've used STA for trip insurance for many years. They have been the least expensive (up until recently for those of us over 35), and they were very good when I had to make a claim. STA caters to students so this might be perfect for your son. I agree with rickandpat, medical evacuation and emergency medical care are of primary importance. Wish I were 18 again and going to Peru...he'll have a great time!

Thanks all for suggestions.I think we will look at a basic coverage which is modest in cost. So far I like TravelGuard which has 70% back on 'cancel for any reason' for the price of about $230, and also their basic coverage without 'cancel for any reason' at $140. Has anybody had any trouble with TravelGuard ?

Well, I've never made a claim, but I sure hope they're reputable because that's who I use. Anyone else?
