South American city for 2 female travelers to visit mid June?
 

A friend and I want to visit South America this June. We plan to leave the 18th and return the 23rd or 24th.

We're both 30year old ladies who love nature,food,art,history, adventures, sometimes even night life.

We're also looking for a city that will be warm that time of year (and want to avoid the rain if possible).

We'll probably stay in hostels, they seem affordable.

What's a city to visit and an itinerary we could put together?

Have you checked airfares and flight times to/from any cities that interest you?

If you are going from the US, that is not much time for such long flights.

Get some guide books.

Rio de Janeiro, a gorgeous city right on some wonderful beaches. The weather in June is great for touring the city, much less humid and rainy than during November through March. Lots to see and do. Lots of great music/nightlife.

I live in Nevada, United States. I've checked plane tickets to a few South American cities and it averages out to about $550 round trip.

My budget is about $1,000 for the week.

Rio isn't really expensive right now, being there, that is; the exchange rate is good. Airfare is still high.

How about Cartgena then? From the northeast US anyway, airfare is under U$400 RT.

Cartagena is very hot and humid all year, June is the month when thunderstorms really ramp up. So if the 'no rain' thing is important it might not work so well. June, as you know is "winter" in South America. There are some places where there is virtually no rain (such as the west coast of Peru) and the temps tend to be mild year round although June is foggy, like San Francisco).

You can use weatherspark to research climate for individual cities and countries.


I like to go to Lima Peru in Summer to get out of what I consider "heat" but the airfares tend to ratchet up in summer. Coming from LAX you can find a nonstop flight on LATAM.

I like Lima for food, art, history and nightlife... Fantastic museums and food. You could do a trip down to Paracas/Ica/Huacachina/and Nazca, then return to Lima (all by bus on major highway). Those places are in the Atacama Desert and warmer. The Nazca Lines overflight is a little expensive by Peruvian but not international standards. You might like the dune buggies in Huacachina for adventure and the boat tour by the Ballestas Islands...you'd be very luck to see the penguins but there will be lots of other seabirds, dolphins, and maybe sea lions. If you decide to go to Peru you can post on the SA forum and a few of us can give suggestions.

Since June is popular I would try to line up hotels as soon as you decide to get the best value places.
