Should I avoid a layover in Bogota, Colombia?
 

I'm planning a trip to Ecuador. The best fares are for flights that stop in Bogota for a few hours to/from. With the US state department warning against travel to Colombia, should I opt for a different flight? I am not deeply concerned since I am not planning to travel in Colombia, but just passing through on flights that layover there. However, I'd like to hear if you have experiences to share.

I realize the importance of travel advisories are subjective/relative.

I just had stopovers there on my way to and from Ecuador in December. No problems whatsoever. Just an airport.

The only danger is that the beautiful scenery as you land and takeoff might cause you to ignore the State Department and plan a trip there. I'm a little tempted to do just that.

I AM planning a trip there. Why would you be worried it you're not even planning on leaving the airport?

I wondered if I should be worried because of the travel advisory. I've been to a handful of countries on the current list, but I don't recall that I traveled there while they were on the list. My ticket is booked. Enjoy your trip!

The travel advisory, as of 2012, applied to rural areas and "parts" of some cities. There are parts of some US cities that can be dangerous too. But you are not going into a city. The airport is likely to be well guarded and, on an internationl ticket, you possibly will stay in a secure transit area. Relax and enjoy your trip.
