Ship travel to South America

Hi. I am planning to go from Europe to South America by ship. Destination Brazil, Peru or Columbia. Reason why by ship is the travel costs. I would like to get job on a ship, and work for ticket and food. Do you have any experience yourself, do you have some contacts of people who sale or travel by ship from Europe to South America. If you have some contacts of somebody who works on ship, so I can ask for job on ship that would be great. Thank you.

Doesn't ship's crew have to be a member of some union that certifies competence in some area of ship's operation?

I think you're looking for something that doesn't exist anymore. Hopping a freighter and working for your passage are something out of a bygone era.

Working on board is mostly prevented by unions (and lack of training). But many freighters carry a small number of passengers and from what I've read are highly desirable. There are several websites around the internets which cover the topic. Use your google.
