Santiago, Chile & Buenos Aires, Argentina
We are planning a return trip to BsAs for January, 2012; we were there this past January and loved it!! We'd like to go to Santiago, Chile "on the way", for a few days. We depart from the NYC area airports, preferrably Newark. At first, we were considering a side trip from BsAs to Mendoza for 2 nights. Just thought of an alternative idea: a day trip from Santiago to the Chilean wine country instead.
Has anyone flown from NYC to Santiago, then to BsAs, then a round-trip from BsAs to Mendoza, then back to NYC? What is the best way to do this? Also, what are your thoughts about Mendoza vs. the Chilean wine country? Thank you very much for your advice. |

argentinaforless.com can both book you RT EZE or open jaw SCL EZE would cost a bit more despegar.com works well for this if you want to DIY I like Mendoza though Chilean wineries like Concha Del Toro better rep more upscale a bit prettier better soil so foodie/winos prefer Chile. I am not picky so I do fine in Argentina. Happy deciding! |

One consideration in flying from Mendoza to Santiago is that you (each) will incur an additional reciprocity fee for Chile. On the other hand, if you go by bus (e.g. Andesmar) you will avoid the Chile reciprocity fee, save money and enjoy, what I have been told, is an extremely scenic ride over the Andes.
We're planning to do this, in reverse, next March. _____________________________________ Vic's travels: http://my.flightmemory.com/vogilvie |
If crossing by land from Mendoza to Santiago in January, go armed with a good deal of patience. The border is extremely busy at that time of year and the usual 6-7 hr trip can easily turn into 8-9, more at the beginning, middle and end of the month as Mendocinos come to the beach this side of the Andes! It is a very scenic route though.
