San Pedro de Atacama
Hello -- Visiting San Pedro de Atacama in January (4 nights) and would appreciate input on both hotels and excursion companies. I've looked at the all-inclusive options and would prefer not to go this direction...not my style in general and also have a hard time justifying the cost given that I hope not to spend much time at the hotel! Having said that, I'm also not going to the hostel end of the spectrum. Anyone have experience with Hotel Cumbres? Other suggestions? I"m fine being slightly out of town... may go in for dinner but not looking for nightlife. How about recommendations for excursion companies?? I'm happy to pay for smaller group experience. Thank you in advance!!

The all-inclusives, although pricey, generally offer a better experience on the tours they offer. You usually get a choice each day and groups are small. The guides are employed by the hotel so the standard of guide is good.
If you price separate tours it can add up to quite a bit but will probably come out to less. It just depends on what you want to spend and whether you think the difference between taking tours + a hotel is better value than an all-inclusive.
Cumbres has good hotels in Puerto Varas and Santiago. I have experience of those but not the one in San Pedro, which must be fairly new. But the brand is reliable.
