I will be traveling to Salvador next week--any suggestions on the best places to exchange currency (best rates)? I'll be staying at a hostel, not a hotel, and do not believe they do exchanges.

Probably the airport. There are a range of tourism operators who do provide cambio services both in the Pelourinho and in Comercio. There are a couple in Largo Terreiro de Jesus, near the Banco do Brasil.
