Salta to the Salinas Grande on Route 51??
 
Messed up on my rental car dates and now have to pick up at the airport on our way to the Salt Flats instead of in town.

Looks like the airport is on Route 51 and it looks like you can take that to the Salt Flats. Is it possible? Is it recommended? If not, I guess we we'll have to just double-back through Salta.

Basically that it isnt a very exciting drive - rough, not a lot of services and the views are better on the other route.
