Salkantay trek with kids?
 

Hey All,

Did anyone hike this trek with kids (older..~10-11) ?
We're planning a trek with horses as backup...
I would appreciate any feedback

You need to check this out with the tour operators. Some (possibly the more reputable ones) insist on a min age of 14, other, less reputable ones, may take kids as young as 10 as the are reluctant to turn away business. We haven’t done the Saltankay hike but have done numerous other treks in Peru and I can’t recall ever seeing any 10 year olds on those.

Whether children or adults, these treks are tough and are at high altitude and should only be taken on by those with reasonable fitness levels. Altitude prep is important, more so for kids, but it is not the only consideration. Generally speaking horses are used for carrying equipment and not for passenger use. traveling in the mountains to Peru with children will be difficult, when we were in Peru in December we did not meet children under 15

Did you book the trip? We went with 12 as youngest. An experienced, athletic, motivated hiker. Knowing how to deal with altitude symptoms, and maturity to handle the hike are all key for them to enjoy the adventure. I have heard stories of parents and kids arguing and begging for the kid to keep hiking. That would be miserable for everyone. So it depends on the child's interest and motivation level.
