Thank you avrooster for posting my link. Yes, we just returned from 20 days in Argentina and Uruguay. We had absolutely no problems and in fact, found everyone to be extremely friendly and helpful. My husband does speak fluent Spanish and made friends with everyone he met! We really enjoyed talking to all of our taxi drivers. We were surprised by how many police we saw on the streets in all of the towns we visited. The experience of the OP is very frightening and actually of all of the cities we visited on our trip, maybe Mendoza was the most dicey but we come from the Bay Area of California and one must be careful all of the time!

I am in BA right now. Today my husband witnessed an older gentleman assaulted right in front of our hotel (the Marriott)! He said it happened so fast that it was amazing. The young assailant grabbed the old man's camera from over his arm in broad daylight (about 3 p.m.). The older man yelled at the top of his lungs and security from the hotel went running out, but the assailant ran off before anyone could do a thing.

We have been a little paranoid after hearing how careful we have to be. After today's scene, we've determined that it doesn't matter where in the city you are, even nice areas. You just need to be extra careful, not show any visible signs of valuables, and hold your bags and wallets close.

My comment about "facts" was not meant to insult you, RSS. Forgive me for my clumsy choice of words. The point I was trying to make is that world wide crime statistics show that many cities in Europe and the United States are more dangerous than BA.....including Barcelona, Washiington, D.C. and St. Louis.
