Posada Amazonas or Wasai Tambopata
 

My husband and I are planning a trip in June to the Amazon. We plan on spending 3 nights there and is deciding between Posada Amazonas or Wasai Tambopata. From a price prospective, I am indifferent between the 2 which seems about $60 difference. Does anyone have any experience or input?

We were at Posada Amazonas in September. We did the 3 night stay. It was one night too long. There wasn't that much to do for 3 days, and it was unbearably hot, hottest most humid place I've ever been in the world.

The lodge was okay, definitely very basic. Food wasn't too good and they always ran out before everyone got some (especially if there are German groups there who take it all the first time though the buffet line). And they allow smoking in all the lounge areas so there's no way to get away from the smoking Europeans.
All lights/lanterns are turned out at 9:00pm so you have to go to bed then.

Overall, not something I'd ever do again.

I, on the other hand, had an excellent stay at Posada Amazonas this past July. I thought the food was great. I had a knowledgeable guide who was able to give my husband an I an in-depth understanding of the nature and wildlife of the area. We saw 4 different species of monkeys, a two-toed sloth, Capybaras (the largest rodent in the world), 2 different types of Macaws, a Toucan, and many different types of birds. Although, in efforts to be eco-friendly, the lodge is without hot water or electricity. Personally, I found the cool (but not cold) water showers to be refreshing with the heat and humidity. I would definitely recommend the lodge.

First you are WAY far away from the Amazon

It is the correct, Tambopata is actually not the Amazon river, it is one of the headwaters of the Amazon river, as the Andes meet the Amazon. Actually, a beatiful book on the region is called "where the Andes meet the Amazon." (http://www.amazon.com/Where-ANDES-me...5386655&sr=1-1).

While it's not near the Amazon River, OP didn't say say anything about the Amazon River. You don't have to be anywhere near the Amazon River to be in the Amazon Rainforest/River Basin.

Are you going to be based in Puerto Maldonado? It's probably good to note that the Wasai is 4 hours by boat from PM, while Posada Amazonas is less than 2 hours away.
