Peru- Mountain Lodges of Peru vs Austin Lehman/time in Lima

Peru- Mountain Lodges of Peru vs Austin Lehman/time in Lima
I am planning my hubby's 50th- I know he would love the lodge-to-lodge hiking trip in Peru- but I am a bit worried about my ability to handle the altitude. Been hiking in Telluride (Ajax is 12,800 and kicked my butt) but we live in Atlanta so would really need to acclimate. Here are my questions:
does anyone have input on the Austin Lehman tour (which uses Mountain Lodges of Peru as partner) or MLP lodge to lodge tour?
I assume we should fly into Lima a few days earlier before we need to arrive in Cusco- is it worth spending time in Lima or should we get to Cusco earlier than departure for tour and spend time there instead of Lima?
Austin Lehman tour seems a bit less rigorous than the MLP tour, so looking for any insight whatsoever. We've planned lots of great trips with fodorites' help....

When I did Salkantay(Savage Mountain) trek with www.incalandadvenutres.com saw the MLP folks on horseback
so www.mountainlodgesofperu.com for me.Always take Diamox
48 hours berfore and 48 hours after rapid ascent so it is
always wise to adjust in Sacred Valley for acouple of days.

FYI Cusco is the highest you will be at 11000 ft. Sacred Valley 8900 ft or so.Machu Picchu is 7900 ft.It is actually
DOWNHILL albeit oversome passes butit is where you sleep
that counts the most.Mountaineers say "Climb Highbut Sleep
Low it is the Only way to Go". Odds are great if you follow
directions you will be finewith the altitude.
Congrats it is an AWESOME adventure I truly love Peru.

Thanks qwo- saw your other post for my slovenia idea- and we have seen you often on costa rica forums- headed there in Jan. for 5th time for short getaway. SOunds like we should sleep in Lima for a night or two before we hook up w/ any tour in cusco. Just need to figure out if i should book myself at incaterra, etc. and take guided hikes as we wish, or commit to a lodge to lodge adventure.

Got wonderful tips and info from Mountain Lodges of Peru- turns out they are the guides/lodges for Austin Lehman's tour....MLP sounds like it might be the one. If anyone loves a hotel in Cusco for a night or two before/after, let me know!
