Peru -- Cameras???
 

I've been researching/planning our trip to Peru for over a year now. Will be leaving in 10 days or so. Today, I came across a thread on TripAdvisor that talks about restrictions in terms of number of cemaras/memory cards you can bring into the country. Have not seen any mention of any such restrictions in any guidebooks, forum postings, etc. before today.

Anyone posting here have experience with this? I always travel with an SLR and a P&S digital as back-up and lots of memory cards. Plan to have a second lens for my SLR. Hubby has what might look like a professional video camera to the non-initiated and a small handy-cam ... again, for back-up.

Be careful to hide your gear easily stolen

I was there in January and actually read the customs form. While there are not "restrictions" per se, if you exceed the amount (and they find them) they can charge you an import duty. If you are traveling with your husband, you can each take one camera and one video camera, so just split them up.

Memory cards are pretty easy to hide. I think the limit was one extra card, but someone else on TA said two extra. Not sure.

I gather the reason for this is to protect commercial importers, and they're probably more concerned with Peruvian residents. But there is a random inspection system (red light means you get your bags checked).

My husband and I were there last October and it's definitely fine. You are meant to declare what you have on the customs card, but they didn't check us. Just keep your extra cards somewhere on you (in small pockets) -- you'll be fine!
