Just home from Peru. The rumor about limiting visitors to MP is true. During the high season, tourists are limited. Plan on booking a tour. If you take the train and expect to buy a bus ticket, you may not be able to get to the top. People walking the Inca Trail will be limited to 400/day during high season. The taxi, bus, train takes about 10 hours with about 3 hours at MP and lines were LONG. The cost is about $500 pp. Staying overnight at the village and seeing the sun rise looks like it was well worth the extra packing even though we didn't.

There is so much wrong in this post that I don't know where to start. Now that Machu Picchu is a tourist 'tick box' it is worth doing some advance planning to get the most out of the rather considerable expense.

Suoma, you may not have known that it is easier to see MP starting with a hotel base in Ollantaytambo, rather than Cusco. If you start in Cusco, then you are looking at approximately 6 -7 hours (round trip) travel time. From Ollantaytambo, you can cut that in half.

Entrance tickets to MP should be purchased either in the town of Aguas Calientes, or online in advance. There is a limit of 2500 people per day to see Machu Picchu. There is an additional 400 per day who can buy tickets to combine Huayna Picchu hike with Machu Picchu. That is not the same as the 500 permits available per day to hike the Inca Trail.

Buses run continuously from town to the site.

Did someone in Cusco sell you a package tour (and a bill of goods?).

I do hope you enjoyed your rather brief visit.
