Perito Moreno mini walk
 

We have this booked for August. It includes a walk on the ice with crampons. Does anyone who has done it have any comments on the degree of fitness required ? We have one member of the group with a dodgy knee.

I believe August is a little early for these activities and the "member of the group with a dodgy knee" may be unable to join the tour.

The tour's website says "people with overweight, some type of disability, or health problems" cannot participate.

How do you mean Early ?

"Early" means that it will still be very, very cold. The high season for Calafate is during our summer and August is late winter.

ok, cold we can handle, we finish the trip skiing in Chile so we will have plenty of cold weather gear.

We did the mini trek in March 2011, I had a problem with the crampons which were not originally put on me correctly. As I took each step the crampons would stick in the ice and my shoe would pull out making walking really tough. One of the guides noticed about half way thru the trek and fixed the crampons for me and then it was much easier. If I had a dodgy knee I would be concerned about injuring it on the mini trek. It's not a horribly difficult trek (and not long at all) but walking on the ice can be tricky. It appeared that most of the people were in their 20's and 30's or thereabouts -- we were by far the oldest being retirees. I think there is an age limit and they do say no disabilities etc as AV mentions, but don't know how much they enforce that. Our TR describes the trek

It will be very cold in August, so be prepared for that. Age limit is 65, and dodgy knees will not work un the ice for sure. this excursion should start to operate on august 1st, but you shoul check this first. Enjoy it, it´s a great excursion for sure!!

Its been confirmed, so we are green light to do it.
