Patagonia - GPS and Satellite communication ?

good morning!

i plan to do the O circuit trek late january 2026. it will be 8 days, solo, fully independent backpacking trip. I plan to carry my own tent, food etc.

My questions are around safety.

A) how well marked is the "O" trek ? what kind of maps are most people carrying? Any apps you can suggest ? (I usually purchase the route on guthook when backpacking in the US. any suggestions?)

B) In case of an emergency, here in the US i usually carry satellite communciator Garmin Inreach Mini, so i can communicate with my loved ones back home and also in case of an emergency -- i am unsure of what i should do in case of SOS in Patagonia. please advise.

C) Do all refugio's have the outlets to charge phones ?

thank you so much in advance for your responses. Appreciate the community.

You are unlikely to get many response to your specific questions here. I suggest asking on the Tripadvisor or specialties trekking fora where you may find people that have actually done the O. I know several that have done that trek.

You are leaving it rather late to sort all this out and, given the events of a few weeks ago - see https://www.reuters.com/sustainabili...ad-2025-11-18/ I would make sure you have EVERYTHING in place and organised in good time. It seems it is not wise to rely on rangers or staff at refugees if things do go awry. Any tech you use is only as good as teh people at the other end picking up you call.

You got a lot of good advices at the TA-Forum. Fortunately there are the experts.
