Have a good flight and a great time in our country, Gariem!

We had a wonderful visit to Buenos Aires a few years ago with the exception of one taxi ride. We had been told over and over by our hotel(Melia Recoleta Plaza) to always have a taxi called for us. The one time we didn't do that was in front of MALBA,the art museum. He did not take us where we asked to go, and headed down a one way dead end street. When he slowed down, we opened the door and fled, running down the center of the local street until we reached a main throoughfare. So please do call for a taxi at all times. The rest of our stay in BsAs was terrific, espepcially the food.

On TA they have a new thread in which a forum member posts about a friend's problems with a cab ride from our international airport.

If you wish to read about the things you should NEVER do, go to: http://tinyurl.com/d7axn5c

We have been warning against doing this kind of thing for YEARS.

As I said in a previous post in this thread: "A variation of this trick was tried on me by a NY cabbie back in 1979. It didn´t work for him."

Gariem:

Are you back home?

I'm sure everyone is expecting a GREAT trip report from you.

I'm quite confident you won't disappoint us. LOL!!!!

I just wanted to add for others who may read this that the cabbies in BA were the most engaging and friendly I can recall. They added to my positive experience in that city. I loved Palermo Soho and would look to stay there for a future visit.

...remember me? We had 10 Fodorites at a GTG dinner together in BA including Avrooster in 2010.

I lived in an apartment in Recoleta for a month two years ago and felt quite safe walking around but with usual precautions.
Although an upscale neighbourhood, one day a homeless looking man seemed to want to follow me into my apartment building. The guard at the neighbouring building saw him and immediately questioned his intentions and the man left.

As far as taxi's go, we always hailed radio taxis and never had a problem. I have just returned from Cairo and there you negotiate a price at the hotel for a driver who is with you all evening, staying outside the restaurant or whereever until you are ready to go home. Although it seems extravagant, it was still less than eating at a good restaurant in Canada including the meal. I can't remember if it would be cost effective to do that in Buenos Aires. As a woman on my own that would be an ideal solution.
