Palermo-Soho Hotel in Buenos Aires?
 

I am beginning to do preliminary research re a BA hotel stay which will be prior to a cruise. Will probably stay at least 3 nights.

Ordinarily we might choose something like a Park Hyatt or Four Seasons but would prefer to be in some sort of interesting neighborhood with restaurants, etc., close by.

I have read that the Palermo Soho neighborhood might be a good fit. I would appreciate any relevant comments, pro or con.

I haven't been to BA is a few years. Hopefully some that have visited in the last year or so will chime in. I liked Palmero Soho -- its considered hip & trendy with lots of restaurants, bars and interesting little boutiques. I think it would be a fine place to stay for a few days pre cruise.

I liked Palermo Soho a lot. Some terrific restaurants there and as Yestravel says, it is quite a hip place. We have a friend that is the sommelier at a wine bar there, Trova, that is well worth a visit.

We stayed in an apartment so have no experience of the hotels in the area but, if your usual haunts are FS or Hyatt, to may want to take a look at the Alvear Palace in Recoleta. If there on a Sunday don't miss the Sunday brunch. Click on my screen name for a TR.

All that said I still think the surrounding neighborhood is an important factor and let's face it: supposed "high end" hotels are great but that's not the only consideration.

I stayed in the Duque, which deserved its high TA rating, but am not sure its bit of Palermo was Soho. Good restaurants nearby.

I was going to sugggest the Alvear Palace also. It's in a very nice neighborhood and lots of people love Recoleta as their place to stay. We stayed nearby Alvear Palace at LoiSuites many years ago and were quite happy with the neighborhood. Lots of more high end shops and nice restaurants. Of course the cemetery is there too. I dont know either of the hotels you mention.

The Alvear Art is also a great choice and it is owned and run by the same people as the Alvear Palace.

But the Alvear Palace is in the best location in BA, with great restaurants only a couple of blocks away, such as Sottovoce for Italian and Fervor for steak, as well as La Bourgogne for French, located within the hotel.

If you go early (for Argentina) such as at between 8 and 8.30 PM, you don't really need a reservation. If you must, have the concierge reserve for you on the same day you are going.

Not a fan if Palermo Soho. A little too gritty for me. The Park Hyatt Recoleta (Palacio Duhau) is also nice..friends room was in a new modern building on points. Palace public areas have the old architecture.,Not sure how it compares to avroosters favorite.

There are numerous reviews of both the Alvear Palace, the Art, the Park Hyatt and the Algodon Mansion and I have read most of them.

Once you pick your way through them and discount the comments which seem not pertinent to oneself ("it seemed just too 'old world' to me" is a perfect example of <B>not pertinent</B> vs. <B>invalid</B>) the differences between these establishments start to become a bit more clear.

Again, everyone's comments above are appreciated and valued and I remain grateful for them.

The Palacio Duhau Hyatt has two very different parts: the old Duhau mansion on Avenida Alvear and a new building built by Hyatt on Posadas street. In which part you prefer to stay is a matter of taste.

The Alvear Palace recently made available a completely new high floor with what they call their ¨Lounge Suites¨ and a roof top bar.

Well, just to chime in and agree with just about all of the above recommendations - though I would not suggest the Alvear Art (Alvear Palace, definitely, yes) as that neighborhood is less fine for a first visit.

I would appreciate it if you were willing to explain <B>what it is</B> about that Alvear Art "neighborhood" that makes it IYO "less fine." And thank you for willing to be specific.

IMO, and of course, it is simply that, the area near the Alvear Art is a bit less safe for walking at night. When I walk without my DH,in the later evening, then I am more cognizant of feeling a little uncomfortable in that area, rather than in Recoleta or Palermo Botanico or much of Palermo Soho or Belgrano....just my feeling...

Just to throw 2 more into the mix ... Boutique Hotels in Recoleta that I have stayed for a minimum of 7 days ...
The Sileo and the Art Suites .. the Loi Suites is also worth looking into .. you cannot ask for a better location .
The Alvear is lovely and on the stuffy side but grand ..

After booking 2 different Airbnb and TripAdvisor apartments that got cancelled, we chose the Atempo. I need a kitchen (thus the apartment) and the added space/balcony/private grill are all a bonus. Breakfast included. In a bike friendly part of the city and they have bikes to borrow/rent.

I haven't been yet, so all I could do was go with the reviews which a positive, especially about the area. We go soon! I'll report back if you wish.
