One destination for a week in Argentina
 

What single location would you stay in argentina for one week other than Buenes Aires

The Northwest.

We are about to explore Bariloche, the 'Lakes District,' early next year, but until then, our experience in Argentina would clearly point to the NOA. We loved it.

We had a guide for Salta > Purmamarca, Tilcara, Salt Flats and points (gorgeous and fascinating). We rented a car and drove Salta > Cafayate and that area (breathtakingly beautiful). We did not have time for Tucuman, or Cachi, but would have loved to explore those areas too.

There are advantages to having a guide and advantages to independant touring; the choice is completely a matter of your prefered way to visit an area.

There are good Trip Reports: Crelleston, Yestravel, and I submitted one too - so check them out for ideas. Enjoy the planning.

You don't say at what time of the year you plan to come, RDF.

If coming during our summer months, I would suggest our South, instead of our NW.

I would stress however that this is not really a "single location" as to get teh best out of the place you really need to either rent a car and drive the circuit of the area or hire a guide Angie Valdez comes highly recommended and regularly posts here as "Flintstones". A week would be aperfect amout of time to see the area.

If however, you are travelling in the Argentine summer then as avrooster rightly points out, the south would be better weather wise. We loved the Seven Lakes area from San Martin de los Andes to Bariloche

I also wrote a trip report on the NW. Defintely worth a week there. Loved the Lakes District as well. Can't go wrong with either region. Both phenomenal. Just last night I was saying how I'd love to go back to both places.....

Avrooster and skatedancer yes, your TRs are excellent resources. There are others, as well.

We did go to the NOA in the Arg. summer (February) and loved the season there. If you are very heat reactive then yes, head further South, if not, do not avoid the NOA in Arg. summer. Just, MHO.

And there are, as crelleston indicated, good guides in the NOA - David Salta, Giena, Tracey (of Nomads) and others who do not happen to post here.

Exactly how hot is it? We are thinking of next Feb (2012). I don't like it too hot. Thanks

I loved the NW -- we were there for 9 days in November and it was very hot--supposedly hotter than normal for November. It did cool down considerably at night, but the days were hot hot hot. So depending upon what is too hot for u u might consider going elsewhere.

NW on January/February gets extremely hot, take that under consideration when planning a trip. It cools down a lot at night but during the day temperatures can reach up to 100Fº, it's very dry heat though, so if you stay in the shade and drink lots of water it's not really that bad.
It is an amazingly beautiful destination though, but like it's been said above, it is not a single city but many. It's more like an area, if you visit salta then you must go to jujuy, purmamarca, humahuaca, the salt deserts, etc. People there are extremely kind and friendly too, which make the NW all the more charming.
