New Year's Eve in Rio with children
 

We will be staying at Mercure Apartments in Botafogo over the Dec. 31st. We have 2 children aged 15 and 9, We would like to see the NYE fireworks somewhere in Copacabana but wondering if Copacabana would be safe or if maybe better another location !!?? Then, how could we go back to the hotel after midnight's fireworks ? Are taxis running regularely ? Thanks for hints and suggestions

"Reveillon" as it is known is one big block party.

Roads are blocked to traffic from 6pm on 31 December until 4am on 1 January. There are taxis, tourist buses drop people off and urban buses have free access.Overall usual petty theft issues but safe and secure usually in Copacabana well patrolled.

Copacabana will be safe, the problem is pick pockets because of the crush of people, and the possibility of getting separated from each other. Make a plan for finding each other if you get separated.

In spite of the concerned advice above, there is NO REASON to believe the current spike in gang/police activity will be active in late December. Don't worry about it.

My concern was like drunk people throwing glass bottles on the crowds or similar... but I guess this is the same all over the world on that day !
Yes we will make a "rescue plan" in case we get separated, especially for the 9 yrs kid. Is there any specific suggested spot to see the fireworks ? I mean from the ground on the beach or on a hill or... ?

Anywhere along the beach is good. The middle might be best.

If anyone got drunk/rowdy and started to throw things the people around him would put a stop to it. The crowd is too big for bad behavior and the group mentality is to keep it safe.

Oh - and wear sneakers, not sandals and definitely not flip flops. If there IS any broken glass on the street or the sand, you don't want to step on it...
