Maps of Buenos Aires
I just bought a beautiful new map of the city and it has NORTH facing towards the top. This is what I'm used to... but I have 2 small pocket tourist maps that I've realized have SOUTH facing towards the top. Is it common for maps of Buenos Aires to have South pointing to the top? Will all the subway maps and bus routes on poles be that way? I find it so weird.. And I really don't want to get rid of this beautiful new map I just bought.
When I was in Buenos Aires last year, it was only on the last day that I realized, by looking at a different map, that I had the whole city backwards in my head. |
ttt,
anyone? Also, I'm wondering now if all the maps of all cities in Argentina will be the same. Does anyone know if the maps in Mendoza, Bariloche and other places, have south facing the top? Also I'm very curious why. |
Not sure, since I'm a local and don't use maps much (LOL), but I believe that could be the case only for some "small pocket tourist maps".
Have a great time in our country. |
kodi - there does not seem to be any definitive map direction for BsAs maps. Some N up - Some N down.
I would also like to know why...it's enough to make one dizzy. ~MarnieWDC |
I think my guidebooks have north at the top, but your post made me think of the inverted map of the modernist artist from Uruguay, Torres Garcia with south at the top:

Just to confuse me even more, the map of the city in the Fodor's book has west to the top.
The good thing is that I realize the differences before this trip. My Eyewitness Top 10 book has north to the top... GOOD !! I really like my new Time Out book, it's small and easy to pack, as is, the Top 10 book. I have marked the direction in bold colour to remind me. |
