Machu Picchu Train Tickets

We are going to Machu Picchu in March and plan on taking the train from Sacred Valley up to MP, spending the night at a hotel, then going from there on to Cuzco. Do we need to buy our train tickets in advance (like from the U. S.) or can we wait until we get to Peru to purchase them? Is there any luggage restriction? The Peru Rail web site is currently down so I can't get the info from them. Thanks.

It is best to buy them as far in advance as you are comfortable with, since the best times usually sell out by the day of travel. There is only a small penalty to change the day of travel (24 hr minimum notice). I'd say as soon as you have your airline tickets to Cusco confirmed, I would go ahead.

There are luggage restrictions although they don't seem to be followed consistently. Most hotels are used to holding luggage for you. Since you will be in the SV before you go to Cusco, my advise would be to just leave most of the luggage in the SV hotel, and book your train round trip to the Sacred Valley, take a taxi between SV and Cusco and stop by your hotel to retreive luggage before continuing to Cusco. YOu can do some sightseeing between Ollantaytambo and Cusco by taxi.

www.apulodge.com my fav in www.ollantaytambo.org

$25 cab ride from airport...

Buy cheap train tickets through them or at station there.

www.casa-andina.com also nice there for upscale.

Luggage rules are not enforced.

www.peru-explorer.com/presidente best lodging for price in MP

if you want to overnite there and go up for the sunrise/HP

Have fun,
