Machu Picchu from Lima
Hi, we're staying in Lima and want to visit Machu Picchu, coming back to Lima afterwards. Can you please suggest the best way to get there?. We're planning on spending 2 nights in Machu Picchu, does this seem like the best idea ?
thanks for your help |
The only way to get there is via Cusco and I really wouldnt suggest you attempt it in two days. As it seem s you are in a hurry, I would fly to Cusco and then transfer straight to Ollantaytambo in the sacred valley (if only to reduce the effects of altitude).
From Ollantaytambo you will need to stay overnight there and get the first train to Aguas Calientes which is the set off point for MP. You can visit te citadel in a very full day or stay overnight. One night in Ollantaytambo upon your return or go back directly to Cusco for your flight back to Lima. Quite frankly, I wouldn't recommend it, partly because of the altitude issues but mainly because it is an incredible corner of the planet and you would be short changing yourself with such a short visit. A more realistic schedule would be at least three nights in Cusco and another three, maybe four in the sacred valley (inc Machu Picchu) |
thanks for your help, much appreciated

Fly round trip to Cusco, but stay in the Sacred Valley or Aguas Calinentes. YOu can see MP in a full day.
It's bette if you have 4 or 5 days so you can take a few to also see the Sacred Valley sites as well as Cusco city. Best to save Cusco for the end of the 4 or 5 days. With only 2 day I might not spend much time there unless you start diamox a few days ahead. YOu'll need to booktrains to Aguas Calientes from either Cusco or Ollantyatambo..Many more leave from Olly. Also if you are doing this over the holidays..it's very busy and EVERYTHING should be booked in advance, including entrance tickets to Machu PIcchu, which have daily limits. |
Thanks

Just another travel agent pushing tourists to stay in Cusco despite the altitude issues and limited train connections.
