Lima vs Quito

If one was to see Machu Picchu, obviously Lima would be your landing spot. I have not heard good things about Lima esp the weather, and social attributes, safety, also.. (when best to travel..)

Would you go to Quito which is supposedly quaint and easier to do than Lima? For a first impression of SA? My Spanish is super basic, and flying from across the S Pacific.
