lack of privacy on www.machupicchu.gob.pe
Just curious -- is anyone else bothered by the fact that the ticketing web site for Machu Picchu seems to expose people's names and "Identity Document" details?
To see this: 1. Go to http://www.machupicchu.gob.pe/ 2. If the site displays a pop-up about Verified by Visa, close the pop-up. 3. If you are like me and don't speak Spanish well, click the UK flag symbol to make it English. 4. At the top, click "Queries." 5. At the bottom, click "Visitors." 6. Wait a few minutes while the site works. Eventually the screen will update with a list of names and other details, including a column that says "Identity Document" and includes numbers that look suspiciously like passport numbers. I assume that these are people who have tickets (note the reservation numbers at the left), though the list doesn't seem nearly long enough -- maybe these are reservations that have not yet been paid for, or something like that. In any event, is it me, or is this kind of creepy? I also notice that the pages where they want you to enter your passport number and your credit card details are both HTTP, not HTTPS.... sigh. |
Agree they are not wise about identity theft issues.
They are a reputable site VerifiedbyVisa takes all risk but Got my identity stolen in CR off 1costaricalink.com web site one time they switched my mailing address on my Chase business credit card and quickly ran up $150 K which Chase had to eat. Took me 6 months to straighten out investigator said it was Colombian Mafia fronted by a Panama bank. Had to freeze my credit and close all cards it was a nightmare But in the end I lost 0 dollars so I share your concerns So I might just wait or use a good agent in Cusco like pmexplorers.com or cuscoimmersion.org if it bothers you. Thankfully it was not a Debit Card I would have been liable. I have never had a problem getting the tickets the night B4 at the cultural center in AC at the plaza. Soles only EXACT change 126 for me as I recall last but new big fees for HP now insuremytrip.com comp trip cover always wise for me there. Happy Travels, |
Oop wrong web site above they are good missed a hyphen
www.1-costaricalink.com This is the web clone scam site from personal experience. Just to set tyhe record straight apparently they are still operating fleecing folks from the looks of it... On Line web sites can be VERY risky tough to tell the goodies boots on the gound always best for me... |
I get what you're saying. I have no trip to MP coming up, so I haven't actually tried to buy tickets through the website. I have looked at it, though, and the site seems so clunky and full of bugs that I wouldn't trust it to enter my personal information.

I agree it's creepy. But if you're going in busy season and want to hike Huayna Picchu you really don't have a choice. And even if an agent buys your ticket won't your info still show up?
The plus side is that you don't have to get up at 4am to do the HP hike. |
Your passport number is printed on your MP ticket. I was about to toss the used ticket in the hotel wastebasket when I noticed that.
