I visit for extended periods of time. Scarlett is a 4 year expat vet. and AV was born in Argentina and has lived there his entire life. Visitors, Expats and Native Argentinos all offer different perspectives...which should be useful for anyone reading a forum.....
I like Executive Lunches that offer a variety of choices per "paso." Scarlett does not partake. Scarlett likes Melo. AV does not. Readers benefit from different takes in my humble opinion. I am going to go to Melo the next time I am in BA just to see if I agree with AV or Scarlett. |
Well, I'll tell you what, Doc: If Melo seems to you as good as it is made out to be in some of the posts above, I'll pay for your next dinner (not at Melo) and viceversa.
Agreed? |
Doc: Doesn´t this remind of the "good, ole times" on TA, years ago?
BTW, your spelling is improving. You could add a few commas, however. LOL!!! |
Ok, AV, I will take that bet. If the meal is not as good as Graziella and Scarlett have suggested maybe they will help me pay for your dinner :)
|
Well, you never know.....
A comma after "suggested", would be nice.....LOL!!!! |
And may I recommend the Risotto with mushrooms ?

I happen to be allergic to "champignons" and HATE rice, so.....

Hi drawggy, There is a misconception here, in my case I reasonably enjoyed Melo the only time we had lunch there but my point is that I found it much better deal that next door MENU EJECUTIVO being offered in a place I do not recall the name.
I understand that you know several places with great menus ejecutivos that included a lot of goodies like Limoncello ,...I have not been pleased with my recent experiences with menus ejecutivos because I found out quality has gone down, and they offer poor choices, I found a big difference both in quality and choices between a few years back and today which has led me to prefer to order a la carte. Having said this I am taken note of your recommendations for next time in Bue, I am back home now. |
Graciella--I hope the places I mentioned still offer the quality and variety of Executive Lunch options when you return to BA. Not to mention the Limoncello. Things are changing so quickly in BA that it is impossible to predict from one week to the next....For example, on our recent visit my wife and I ate at El Establo. On previous visits we were offered Limoncello at the end of our meal. This time, nada....so sad.
p.s. I love your nostalgic reflections on the Buenos Aires you knew as a child! |
I agree with you drdawggy, things are changing, not to mention some late affairs like the
threat to the newspaper Clarin by the union boss which was filmed....did you see that? I saw by chance before leaving and I am still shocked. I am pleased you like my nostalgic reflections as you call them, in those days for me , a teenager going to Buenos Aires, in a ship that sailed overnight called Vapor de la Carrera was more or less like going to Paris. There were some trams in those days , the same kind that still runs as an antique in New Orleans in front of Tulane. The Confiterias and Cafes were superb, being different times people were of course more polite, policemen salute with a military salute when were asked a simple question, even when asked by a young girl like me. The most well known department store was Harrods in calle Florida. It had a nice restaurant, my grandmother use to take me for English tea. Forget about executive lunches I do not think they were in existence in those days, but the Te Completo either in Montevideo or Buenos Aires, was a thrilling experience, small dishes with all kinds of goodies. Cakes, ham and cheese sandwiches, pancakes, and so forth. For decades Buenos Aires was the safest possible city, even when my children were at the University some 20 years back, a woman could walk alone almost anyplace in the city day or night. There were some great places, for me, called Cervecerias , German style, with outdoor tables scattered in gardens dotted with color lanterns. Great beer, and good simple dishes like chicken pie and al kind of sausages. Argentines were so proud of their country and of course of their Capital. I enjoyed the Colon, the theater, and later when I moved there my tennis club the BLTC. Great red clay courts, members were able to play as long as they felt like it. No timetables, no putting your name down in a list or anything . It was a luxurious feeling. Ok I do not bother you anymore. Have a great time and I shall look for the limoncello. |
Love your descriptions. Graziella5b!

Reminds me of a wonderful book: "Far away and long ago", by W.H. Hudson.

OR of another wonderful book that needs to be written ? ~M

Thank you, I am pleased that a little nostalgia might be of interest to some fodorites....
yestravel, I am planning to go to Paris and Barcelona soon and I was wondering if you could mail me directly regarding the experience of renting in either city. I have the hunch we have similar priorities in choosing....my mail is [email protected]. |
Impetu Bistro: Uriarte 1504
When, we were looking for lunch one afternoon in BA, we read the sandwich board executive lunch menu outside a bistro called Impetu and decided to give it a try. We ordered the plate du jour. Pork medallions with a country berry salsa (blueberry, blackberry, & currants), My DH’s portion was served with the best, brownest, fattest frites that we had in BA. Mine was served with a large, fresh vegetable salad. We had a small bottle of red wine, two bottles of water,a very decadent triamisu that was slathered in warm dark chocolate, and my DH had coffee. All this for the minor sum of $81A. ($23.00C) What a good deal! |
Oh Graziella, I wish you would continue writing your stories of those days ... I just read this to my husband and we were both charmed and wishing things were that way now .. it is sad to think of ways of life that were so nice that are gone now.
We rented in Paris from ParisPerfect http://www.parisperfect.com/one-bedr...nt-rentals.php |
