Charles: My grandson spent a year in Macae, teaching at a private prep school, run by petro-dollars from the varous companies drilling off shore...plenty of money. Shane had a great time there, found the people in town to be very cordial, and had some good times visiting other parts of the country on short vacations. Every student spoke English as their parents from US, Canada, Mexico and Scandinavia, all spoke English. He never mentioned a word about crime or security, but as in any case, be alert. Shane left in '08 to work on his Master's Degree in Oregon. He's now the editorial writer for a Southern Caifronia news paper. Good luck.

We were in Iguacu, Rio and the Amazon back in 1994, and also found the laid back Brazilians to be fun and cordial.
