How Far in Advance of my Trip Should I Get a Yellow Fever Vaccination?

Will be in YF territory early January. I would like to have any potential side effects of the vaccine out of my system before I leave in late December for South America, but still have the vaccine potent in my system. When should I get it? Thanks!

Hello seeksocean:

I am not a medical doctor (DH is) but I am certain that the Yellow Fever shot is potent in your system for many years (10, I think). I have had the shot and worked with many others who have taken it for work-related, international travel. A very few have had shot-lived, and not deblitating reactions, we had none at all (the usual reponse, I think). In any case, it is individual, so your question is a good one.

Check with your MD, but my suggestion would be to take the shots anytime between now and early December. Are you going to Iguazzu ?

I wish you a healthy and exciting trip. ~MarnieWDC
