Guide for Lima, Peru

We will be in Lima for a few days before and after our January trip to MP. Is it a good idea to have a guide in Lima, as opposed to touring the sights by ourselves? (Half day or full day?) If so, please give us names and email addresses of good and reasonable guides. Thank you very much for your advice.

Lima is real easy to get around and to explore. I don't think a guide is needed; just ask at your hotel for advice and enjoy.

Lima's historical downtown is full of history, so a guide would indeed be very useful and efficient if you are short on time. We provide Lima tour services; other reliable local guide services are listed here http://www.limaeasy.com/fun_in_lima/lima_citytours.php

However, if you wish to do it on your own, there are a number of published walking tour maps to be found on the internet. Here is one such example: http://elsol.idiomasperu.com/walking...miraflores.htm. Also, here is a good resource for sel-learning about the city center's attractions http://www.limaeasy.com/fun_in_lima/...lima_walks.php

There are also free guided tours. Young volunteers are ready to share their knowledge with you at http://www.lucidlimafreetour.com. Tours are given in English, and are particularly geared toward the backpacking crowd though everyone is invited.

Lots of good info on limaeasy website mentioned above.

I don't think a tour guide is necessary.

I like the Spanish Language Mirabus tour that leaves the Plaza de Armas and costs only 8 soles (about $3) doesn't really matter if you dont' understand what is said. Just sit on the top level and enjoy. You can take a taxi to the Plaza de Armas from your hotel.

My favorite place to stay in Lima is Second Home Peru in Barranco. It's even more convenient now that the Metropolitano runs to Barranco.

I don't especially like Miraflores, too much traffic noise and too many casinos. But it's where most Americans stay.

Thank you very much for the suggestions. The Mirabus hop on hop off double decker bus tour and others sound good to us.

Peru RoadTrip is run by a young Peruvian/American couple and they do private tours of Lima and all over Peru.

They were recently featured on HGTV's House Hunter International showing the process of them searching for, buying, and starting a Bed and Breakfast in the San Miguel district of Lima.

Along with their really affordable B&B that is close to the airport, they offer airport transport services, tours of Lima, and road trips all over Peru.
