Going to S.A. For first time - Argentina and possibly Machu Picchu

I'm a lone female thinking of going to Argentina and know nothing about South America and would love some tips! Do I need a visa? Shots? I'm thinking of spending most of my time in Argentina (Buenos Aires - which airport to use?...Patagonia...maybe some nice beach) and if I can, squeeze in a quick visit to Peru to see Machu Picchu on the way home (so maybe fly into Buenos Aires and fly out of Cusco or Lima). I have about 13 days to do this. Any recommendations on this itinerary, getting around, places to stay, etc?

Thanks!
A.

my advice? Get a map of South America or a guidebook for all of South America so you can have an idea of how large it is -- and the distances between the places you're considering traveling...

Thanks for the tips, folks! I'm hoping to go in early Feb (soon!). I like the package tour idea, but they charge so much more for lone travelers. I'm overwhelmed by the guide book choices, so I haven't gotten one yet. Here are the places I'm hoping to squeeze into 13 days.

•Rio de Janeiro (beach, Christ the Redeemer)
•Iguazu (Brazil or Argentina? Do I have time to get a visa for Brazil?)
•Buenos Aires
•Cuzco/Machu Picchu
•Patagonia

Any more thoughts?

Thanks!

yes -- you'll spend more time and money on transportation to get to all of those places in 13 days than you'll spend enjoying them.

Head down to the library -- or pick up a full continent guidebook for south america.

Safarigirl8,

Guess you probably have already come to the conclusion most people think you are putting too much in your plate.

We spent 44 days in Argentina, and there are plans to spend quite a few more in there.

We spent 9 days in the Cusco neighborhood alone. And we plan to spend maybe at least another 30 days in Peru.

As for Brazil, I think that two months could give you a fair idea.

Summarizing, some homework is needed as others have suggested.

Try to stick to one country only. My 2 cents worth.
