FLIGHT FROM LIMA TO CUSCO CONCERNS

I have a flight in mid May from Lima to Cusco. What are the chances of it being cancelled because of weather/fog.

Well, May is the foggiest month of the year in Lima, with 24 days of fog on average during the month. But it's the biggest problem in the morning (especially early morning) and at night. What time of day is your flight?

I haven't booked it yet. What do you suggest?

Also, I am planning to fly to Manu from Cusco and would hate to miss that flight. Is it possible to get stuck in Lima for days?

fog is sea fog kind of like San Francisco not common at all.

Thunderstorms rare in CUZ cancel sometimes

insuremytip.com always wise book a flight late in the day.

Beware LAN massive surcharges for tourists like $178.50

per flight go with www.taca.com or locals on

www.traficoperu.com they usually put you on next available

floght so no worries however for strikes etc insuremytrip.com

always cheap and wise.

Happy Planning,

As qwovadis says, Lima gets a sea fog like you see in San Francisco. You see it nearly every day in April, May, and June, but it's always foggiest in the early morning hours. You know, it's rarely bad enough to cause too many problems. The worst that usually happens is your flight might be delayed by an hour or two. I would build in buffer time to the schedule.

Common wisdom abut flying out of Cusco is that you should try for as early in the day as possible. Winds pick up by afternoon, making flying difficult. The airport has no flights after about 3 or 4 p.m. That problem should be alleviated when Cusco's airport moves out to the Sacred Valley between Chinchero and Urubamba. That's not for about three years yet, as I understand.

Oh it is VERY common in May, they even have a special word for the condition, garúa. It can be heavy enough for a mist to fall and the sidewalks to get slippery. The good news for Lima is that you don't need a/c in the hotels in May. But I do not think it is a major reason for flights to be cancelled. I was there last May and my flights in and out of Lima were not more than an hour off. The bigger problem to be aware of is that since May is low season for some locations you need to track the flight schedule, there were lots of adjustments last year by both Star Peru and LAN and not everyone was notified. As a general policy, never plan on returning to Lima the same day as your international flight, too much can go wrong. I like to have a few days in Lima at the end of the trip.
