First trip to Argentina for 7 days: Please Help with Itinerary!
 

Hi All,

My husband and I have never traveled to South America, but want to try something different. We were wondering if we could get some help deciding where to travel in Argentina. The dates we are able to travel is Dec 27th-Jan 4th due to our schedules. We will be traveling from Newark NJ and would prefer not having to hop on another flight in Argentina and would rather take a train if we see multiple cities.

Most of our traveling has been to Caribbean islands and a few cities in Europe. We fell in love with Italy and all it has to offer. We are looking for a resort (4 or 5 star) with a spa. We love to sightsee, but would prefer not walking inside museums all day. We love food, wine, strolling the streets, people watching, outdoor cafes. We love the history that Europe has to offer. We would probably like to split up days filled with sightseeing, some down time for just getting lost and shopping, a relaxing day with wine and food. We do not want to feel rushed on this trip.

I am hoping you all can help with some suggestions for an itinerary and/or cities to visit. Would it be better to just stay put in Buenos Aires for the entire time? Are there any cities close by train that are worth a few days?

With just a week I would be inclined to stay in BA with maybe a side trip of two days to Iguazu. Loads to see and do in BA for a few ideas, here is a link to a blog of our time there. It is a bit old now but stay help a little. Other day trips from BA include the Tigre delta and maybe a trip across the water to Colonia in Uruguay.

Agree with crellston. I was blown away by Iguazu. If you really don't want to fly you could take a ferry to Uruguay for a couple of days. You can pretty much forget trains in South America, alas. Click on my name for my TR including Argentina.

There is one train you could take and that is along the coast to Tigre. It only takes an hour but is a pretty ride.

crellston: I'm not sure about its present status, but I understand the "Tren de la Costa" may not be doing well.

I suggest further research before planning to board it.

I would recommend you to stay in Buenos Aires for a week, there is lot of things to do. You can also go to Tigre to spend a day, this place is very nice and it´s about 20 miles from Buenos Aires, i recommend not to use the trains, we are having a lot of troubles with them. "Tren de la Costa" is no longer working. It´s better to take an organised tour.

Other option is to stay 4 days in Buenos Aires and the other 3 take a tour to Iguazu Falls or to Perito Moreno Glacier. They are amazing places. Unfortunatly the best way to get to both is by plane because of the distances.

No reason to take a tour to Iguazu. Dead easy to do on your own.

What problems are there with the tren de la costaThere seems to be no mention of any on the website.

Our dear government took over the Tren de la Costa.

So, of course the website suggests everything is fine and dandy, but I would, as said above, do "further research before planning to board it."

Maybe that train is working but i wouldn´t take it, there are other ways to get to Tigre.

As someone said, there is no reason to taka a tour to Iguazu Falls or Perito Moreno Glacier, you can do it on your own, it depends on what you prefer. But you have to keep in mind that in both places the natural attraction (the Falls or the Glacier) are not inside the city and you have to transfer to the national parks. If you plan it you can easily do it by your own.

If you have to choose one of them i would choose the Perito Moreno Glacier.
