My husband and I are planning a trip to Peru in October. It was his 70th birthday present so we will not be doing the hiking and camping trip that you did, but I completely enjoyed your blog post. We introduced our daughters to travel when they were just a little older than your girls and now that they are adults, they backpack confidently all over the world. Wonderful!

This is the best way to bring up kids, and let them live outside their comfort zones, learn about the outside world and appreciate how fortunate they are!

So here I am, a reasonably fit 68-year-old, pondering whether I can handle the demands of the Inca Trail . . .

. . . and then I run across this account by a young mother about how she and her husband managed it with two small children! WOW!

Aside from everything else, your photos make it clear that doing the trail adds a degree of appreciation for the Incas' engineering and organizational skills that would be completely unobtainable if you arrived at MP by more mainstream conveyances.

Your daughters are clearly going to be very exceptional young women when they grow up!
