El Chalten hikes for intermediate hikers
My husband and I are planning on going to El Chalten in April. We live in Seattle and go hiking once in a while but I typically go for hikes <6 miles. I exercise quite a bit but find steep, rocky descents to be challenging and tend to take longer than most on descents. My husband's a pretty strong hiker. Would we have a tough time doing Laguna de Los Tres? If so, what hikes should we do instead? And would it help to hire a guide to go with us?

I have the same question! In the meantime, have you seen this website? It's phenomenal: https://elchalten.com/v4/en/self-gui...el-chalten.php

If you do 6 mile hikes regularly and are in good shape, you will have no problem with Laguna de Los Tres. You're probably in better hiking shape than the average person we saw on the trial. You're overthinking this -- it's not Mt Everest. If you consider yourself an "intermediate hiker," you're ahead of the game. If you're slower than most on the descents, then so be it -- you'll just take longer. It's not a race. If you start early, you'll have plenty of time to take it slowly. Enjoy.
There's literally no need for a guide. The trail is very clearly marked and, for better or worse, there are plenty of people on the trail so it's not like you can get lost. |
