Day tour of Santiago- Your recommendation for tour guide or company?

We are heading to Chile at the end of the month. We usually like to do a day tour of a new city when we arrive to help us get oriented and to make sure we get info about the major tourist attractions. I'd like it to be a Santiago city tour--we are getting out of the city later in the trip but plan to be in Santiago for about three days.

Does anyone have a rec. for an English-speaking tour company/guide for a half day (or even full day if it's worth it) in Santiago, Chile? If you could include a bit about what you thought made the tour a good one, I'd appreciate it.

We are not staying in a hotel so I won't have access to some of the usual tourist resources like a front desk or brochures, etc.

You might also consider the hop on/hop off Turistik bus. Not as personal as a private guide and the commentary might not be as complete.

When we were in Santiago in May we booked a private half-day tour (which turned into a full day) through About Chile http://www.chileabout.com/

Our guide was Hugo and he was great---in addition to seeing Santiago we learned a lot about Chile and its people and history. Hugo spoke perfect English and was smart and funny. We would recommend him highly.

Thanks for the recs. Maybe the Turistik bus for an overview followed by a more in-depth tour later.

Maggie-did your tour become a full day because you were enjoying it and decided to extend it? Or was there another reason?

Our tour became a full-day because I think we were enjoying Hugo and he liked us (I say modestly!!). I don't think he had another tour in the afternoon so we just kept going----I think we lucked out, I assume if he had another tour booked we would have gotten the half-day (and we would still recommend him and About Chile. We just lucked out that he was able to stay with us longer than planned.)

I haven't done the bike tour version, but I was very happy with the service at labicicletaverde.com. I took the Human Rights walking tour with Francisca, a wonderful guide.
Here's my trip report for a little more info:

Well I can't rave enough. We actually ended up doing both About Chile for a half day tour and then Bicicleta Verde for their Winery/bike tour. Both were fabulous. Both companies were outstanding to deal with and the guides we had for each were knowledgeable, friendly and seemed to enjoy their work a lot.

Katalina was our guide from About Chile and she had a really terrific knowledge of the history, geography, and present political climate of Chile.

Mac from Bicileta Verde was enthusiastic and just fun to hang out with. The tour was expensive but so totally worth it. This was one of the best tours we've taken in our travels.

We're leaving Santiago tomorrow and are headed south. I'll do a full trip report when we have finished the entire journey.
