1) Is it possible to do see Cusco on your own or is it better to have a tour guide?

2) Which and how many archaeological sites outside of Cusco should and can be seen in a day?

Yes cheaper but you will learn more with a guide.

You don't need a guide for Cusco unless you are really into Inca history and archaeology. A good guidebook - Fodors or Frommers will be fine.

I agree with crellston -- u really don't need a guide. We rarely use guides, but did have one for a few hours in Cusco and while I think he was a very good guide, I do believe we would have done fine on our own.

I agree also that you don't need a guide. However, if you're going to sites outside of town where there aren't that many people around and you're travelling solo then you might feel safer having a guide with you.

I dont know about the safety issue, but the reason we used a guide was for transportation to various sites. U can hire taxis, but we decided to go with a guide for parts of of our travels in Peru. I will add that I felt quite safe everywhere in Peru with the exception of parts of Lima.
