Cusco after Manu?

Because it was recommended that we should not attempt to fly in one day Manu – Cusco – Lima, due to possible flight delays, we are thinking of spending a couple days in Cusco after Manu, then fly to Lima.

Right now, our plans look somehow like this:
Day 1 –Late arrival in Lima
Day 2 – Flight to Cusco, go directly to Ollantaytambo and spend 3 nights there
Day 6 – Machu Picchu, and spend night before and after at Inkaterra in Agua Calientes
Day 7 – Back to Cusc0
Day 8 – 5 days/4 nights tour to Manu Wildlife Reserve with Inka Natura
Day 12 – Back in Cusco, spend 2 nights
Day 15 – Flight to Lima, flight home the next day

I would like to hear your opinion on Cusco after Manu and related altitude issues. Thanks

www.mdtravelhealth.com/illness good CDC info

Diamox a good idea only true preventive

from LIM to CUZ 2 days B4/after

You will adjust to altitude within a couple of days

no worries after that.

Your itinerary looks well crafted GREAT Hotels

www.directrooms.com good deals on Casa Cartagena

or www.libertador.com.pe Palacio Del Inka from

$200/nt or so...

Monasterio small regular rooms dark not good value

suites are ok for a splurge

a wonderful hotel also lots more $$$.

Happy Journey...

My adivice would be to Learn a little Spanish in order to be able to communicate at least a bit when once you get to Peru. Also, if you get the chance, spend as much time as you can with the people. You will not regret that! and definitely have a great time!

qwovadis – thanks for all the recommendations. Haven’t looked for hotels in Cusco, Lima and Sacred Valley yet, but will start that soon. We were not considering Monasterio, based on the so-so reviews, so thanks for confirming them.

mlgb, I hope that Diamox will help – will need to check with our doctors if we can take it, otherwise I guess we need to switch the order somehow, although this one is so good from a logistics point of view.

Jackie, great advice, thanks – especially that none of us speaks any Spanish. Ok, maybe we can manage about 5-6 words…

You could always stay in the SV again if the Diamox isn't advised. It isn't all that far from Cusco.

We went directly to Cusco after Manu. Though we felt the altitude when going up stairs, we did not suffer any ill effects. We still felt very acclimatized, even after 7 days in Manu. We were not doing anything strenuous in Cusco, just touring around seeing sights we had missed & sleeping in after getting up at 5 a.m. every morning in Manu. The main thing you will want to do is laundry. Everything smelled like the jungle so we were more than happy to go home with cleanly laundered clothes.

Manu is so incredible. You will have an amazing experience.
