Currency Woes

Just returned from a great five-week trip to Argentina and Peru. All went well EXCEPT we're stuck holding Argentine pesos that nobody--and I mean nobody--wants. Before returning home we contacted our bank here in the U.S. that provided us with seed money (pesos, nuevo sols) in the first place and they initially indicated they would accept them but upon our return they've backed off on that statement. Since we're holding something north of $500.00 of this money we'd like to retrieve at least some of its value. Otherwise we intent to create a rather kitschy wall hanging with this script and toast our loss over wine with our friends. Do any of you Fodorites out there have any suggestions as to whom we might turn to in order to exchange these pesos?

We have often suggested getting rid of any leftover pesos before leaving Argentina, the last chance of doing so being the tax-free shop at the airport.

Now, your only chance is finding someone who is about to travel to Argentina.

I appreciate your input. With 2-3 days left in BA before moving on to Peru we began trying to dump the pesos. No takers (that we could find, anyway) except for a guy at a travel agency that might as well have been holding a gun to our heads as he quoted his exchange offer. In hindsight, though, we should have taken his offer, forgot about it and moved on. Hindsight right! We thought we ought to be able to do better. Bad mistake. There are no other offers. I agree with you that we need to seek out someone headed for Argentina and cut a deal but, truthfully, we're warming to the idea of the mural I mentioned in my post. Expensive, yes, but then again you won't find its like at Pier 1 or Cost Plus World Market.

I don't like the "mural" idea. You should be able to do better than that.

If so inclined, e-mail me to albertovgalloATyahoo.com and I'll try to help you find someone from the US who is coming to Argentina soon.

avrooster, can't seem to rendezvous with you at albertogalloATyahoo.com. Assuming you're not THE Alberto Gallo at RBS what are we doing wrong and how may we be in touch? Would love to dump the pesos we're holding.

I'm doing my best to help you, Gallivanter.

Try to e-mail me to the right address, which is NOT the one you posted above, telling me all about the amount of pesos you have, where you obtained them, the whole story.

BTW, I have no idea who "THE Alberto Gallo at RBS" is.

My bad, avrooster. Didn't pay close attention to your address. Appreciate your interest in helping us out. Have corrected my error and, hopefully, made contact. The person I alluded to and that I have been aware of is head of macro credit research at Royal Bank of Scotland. It was my feeble attempt at humor. My apology.

Well,
Doesn't look like we'll get back soon (damn!) but would probably have bought those pesos.

Winter here..............I should be there!
