concerning (Sprint) cell phone usage in Brazil

Specifically, Rio. My family (5 total) mostly has iPhones (4 &5) with Sprint, and what we need is for one of those phones to be able to call voice locally in Rio, and the other phones only need to text messages to each other in case we get separated. Do I need any additional hardware? OR Is a call to Sprint before we leave all I need? and finally, is it helpful or needed to try to get a separate local number in Brazil? Thanks for any help with these questions.
