CHILE, please help me in planning our trip.....
Ciao to all of you! I am starting to plan our next visit to Chile. Can you please help me in “assigning” a correct number of days for the main places we visit. The purpose in to book flights as soon as possible…This is my current idea:
9 November (early morning) arrival in Santiago (1 night) 10 November beginning afternoon fly to EASTER ISLAND 10 to 13 November – Easter Island (3 nights) 13 November late evening departure to SANTIAGO 14 November arrival early morning and departure to PUERTO MONTT 14 to 22 November Puerto Montt / Puerto Varas / Chiloe (8 nights) 22 November flight to PUNTA ARENAS 21 to 29 November Punta Arenas / Puerto Natales / TdP / Tortel (7 Nights) 29 November fly back to SANTIAGO 29 November to 4 December Santiago / Valparaiso (6 nights) 4 December departure to Italy I’ll rent a car (1 week) both in Puerto Montt and Punta Arenas IS IT A GOOD “SPLIT” OF THE AVAILABLE TIMEFRAME? GRAZIE, for any suggestion, idea …… Arrivederci. Gianni (Milan, Italy) |
You have to remove Tortel. It is nowhere near where you are going. The 14-22 of November in the lake district - it will be early in the season and the weather might not be the best, but the order of your destinations is fine.
|
I wouldn't spend an overnight in Puerto Montt - very skippable. And six nights in Valparaiso sounds a bit high unless you're planning a lot of day trips.
|
I think the order of your trip is good. We stayed overnight in Puerto Montt due to timing issues and I wasnt impressed with it. I'd skip it if you can.
Is the time in Santiago/Valpraiso for both citiies? We spent 4 nights in Valpraiso and loved it. Wasn't keen on Santiago, but if the 6 nights if for both I woudl split 4 Valpo and 2 Santiago. Are you renting the car in PM so that you can drive to Chiloe and and the lake country? If so that is a good idea. |
First of all: GRAZIE for your help. Some updates: the 6 days at the end of the trip are for both Valparaíso AND Santiago (we then decide how to split). The car we would like to rent in P.M. will be use to visit P. Varas and region AND Chiloe.
I HAVE NOW A NEW QUESTION, please be patient... Limiting the time spent in other places I am now thinking to go 3 / 4 days in the North Patagonia region Flying from Santiago or P.Montt to Coyahique (Balmaceda airport) get a car and visiting Caleta Tortel and that area. IN READING GUIDE BOOKS IT LOOKS TO BE A GOOD CHOICE and the CARRETERA AUSTRAL should not be too bad. I didn't say that we have already visited TdP some years ago during a trip to Argentina (patagpnia and Terra del Fuego). Please, is it a good idea adding another (last!) step??? Again grazie, arrivederci. |
The airport at Balmaceda is 55 kms from Coyhaique (paved) and it is a further 460 kms to Tortel from there on, mainly, rough roads. You could replace 22-29 November with the Carretera Austral but I certainly would not recommend trying to do it in 3-4 days.
I would take a night off Santiago/Valparaiso and add it onto Easter Island. You could also, if spending 6 nights in both, do a side trip to visit some vineyards. |
Ciao, these are last news. Also reading your replies we decided to spend 6 / 7 days on the Caretera Austral from Coyahique to Caleta Totel and (having alreay visited TdP / South (argentinian) Patagonia etc. we DON'T GO to Punta Arenas. So after being back from Easter Island, we 'll stay one week in P. Varas / Chiloe, then fly to Balmaceda a. from P.M., get a car and go up to Caleta Tortel. Then back to Santiago always from Balmaceda airport where we plan to spend our last week (also visiting Valparaíso). I hope that it's a good solution... GRAZIE again, arrivderci.

That sounds much better!
