We just came back from BA after a month and stayed in an apartment in the Recoleta district towards Sante Fe street. Really liked the area for it's architecture, design shops, restaurants and also it's centralness (is that a word?)to everything. The cemetary is a must do.

Having said that I loved going to San Telmo (three times) for the market and the shops and galleries, also Palermo Soho for the funky shops etc., La Bocha (though someone attemped to pickpocket me so be careful)

No one has mention La Cabrera as a wonderful restaurant although some think it is for tourists. There are two with in half a block of each other. We ate at La Cabrera Norta which is in the middle of the block, the other being on a corner. Some 'experts' will say that it is touristy and no Spanish is spoken and that was not at all our experience. It was our first restaurant experience in B A and not one restaurant matched it in all our time there. We went there again for our last dinner and again had a fantastic meal. Make sure you share the meal as it could feed an army. For instance, the Lomo Bife included 4 fillet mignons and many tasting sides. At the end of the evening both times we were presented with a glass of champagne. The service was excellent both times we went. Reserve before 9pm at La Cabrera Norta. Also Lo de Jesus is excellent.

Also in La Bocha we went to an excellent Italian restauant, Il Mattera.

For tango we had a dinner/tango show....not too touristy at Confiteria Ideal in Centro, watched the Milonga upstairs afterwards and took tango lessons there as well. It is a beautiful old tango hall that reminds one of being in Venice.I bought a gorgeous pair of red suede tango shoes a Comme il Fait in Recoleta.

We took the overnight bus to Mendoza also. On the trip there we took Chevallier and Cata International on the way back. There was not much difference in the quality...both were quite excellent and yes, the food is much like airline food but the drinks are much larger and just keep coming if you wish. There is lots of room to stretch out but I suggest earplugs as we had a snorer behind us and could not sleep until we arranged to move. It saved alot on the cost of the trip being approximately $150USD both ways.

Took the Andes high mountain tour through Viator, which was less expensive and though the lunch which you pay extra for was basic, traditional it was fine, fun and not expensive. It included everything the more expensive tours seemed to but I have no way of comparing from experience. We were very happy with our day. Took a chairlift, went all the way to the Christ statue at 13,000ft, saw the ancient spa, Mount Aconacaqua and all the rest. Fantastic!

We arranged a private driver, through our B & B, Roberto, for a wine and olive grove tour. Not expensive and he was very helpful, accomodating and although he did not speak much English we communicated very well. I have his contact info should you want it.

Also went to Colonia, Uraguay on the slower ferry. It is a very pretty town and a great day away. Though the ferry ride is long, you don't get more time there if you take the fast ferry. We booked the city tour including lunch and though we usually find our own way around enjoyed it and had just enough free time to poke around.

I have much, much more but hope to write a trip report soon so watch for it.

Have a great trip!

I forgot to mention a day trip to the delta near Tigre, an hour by train. The company, Delta Unplugged, with their boat, Anna's charm, Ralph's food was a real highlight of our trip and if you have a day it is not to be missed. Others who have gone have said the same. Go to their website to check them out.

Hi, Condu!

With reference to San Telmo, you say above "I would want
to stay there." But the rest sounds as if you mean the opposite. Am I right?

About " La Cabrera", I'm pleased to confirm that I find it noisy, crowded and touristy. The food is decent, but not that great.

Sorry, I misspelled Il Matterello in La Bocha for great Italian food.

Av rooster: let's just agree to disagree on La Cabrera ok?

I loved your city no matter where I went or what I did.

AVrooster,
thank you for noticing that I missed an essential word...not.
I would not want to stay in San Telmo! Fun to visit, though.

Mslizzy, i thought La Cabrera was an over-rated restaurant. But, I know that your experience was at La Cabrera Norte. As I haven't eaten there,
I can not offer an opinion on it.

Condu:
I believe they are two different experiences altogether from what I have heard about the other one which is why it is important to distinguish between the two.

Happy Valentines Day
