Buenos Aires -- do u avoid high-rise apts?
 

Hi, I usually don't like high-rise accommodations when traveling as i find them to feel sterile and too hotel-like to me.

however, i'm wondering if i ought to consider a high-rise apt if part of the visual experience of the city is the urban density. We're staying in Palermo somewhere and we've been looking at quite a few lofts, etc. but I'm wondering if you think there's something to a 15th floor view from that area?

Our friends were here for 3 months and rented in Palermo Chico .. an apt on the 25th floor.
I had a hard time looking down and refused to go out on the balcony but the view was stunning. Especially when they got to see the French Air Show jets doing their stunts..

We also have friends who live on Rep. del India, looking out over the Zoo.. their view is also fabulous.. they are on the 17th floor ..

I generally never stay in highrise apts , I love cozy, character filled places in Paris or London or here.. but in this case, you have a good idea.. the views can be wonderful. And the apt might be in better shape than some of the older ones.

Hi scarlett! I remember your posts on the Europe forum and you were "missed" by many when u moved.. I know exactly what you mean - always on the lookout for interesting apts w/ character, etc but I noticed that in searching in BA, there are so many new loft type buildings in gentrified Palermo that they seem a bit cookie-cutter. I'm looking into a high-rise and although its counter-intuitive, the views look impressive....

I miss Europe too :- ) and have started to look into various trip plans.. we have friends to visit in London, Paris is missing me and we want to go to Spain.

Buenos Aires is wonderful for anyone who likes Europe also... you are always reminded of something you liked in, say, Paris :- )

The thing about high rise apts ..
* You might enjoy the quiet more.
* imo- they are generally newer and the furniture/appliances etc will be in better shape..
* They often have extras that an older place might not .. like 24 hr security instead of just a day or just a night porter. The lift can be different .. we stayed for 6 weeks in an apt building that had the scariest elevator .. 2 people were a squeeze and they were very slow and closed feeling.. I got claustrophobic every time I got in the thing... and we had the dog with us .. not fun. In my building ( which is quite old and not a high rise) , we have the French "cage" elevator so even if it were to stop working, our neighbors could come out and talk to us and feed us lol .. and there is room for 4 people and a Pup.
* Views.. views are good.

How long will you be here ? When ?

If you see apts that you like and have questions, just post the apt link here and we can critique them .. some of the posters here have rented apts and or know the areas etc.. it helps sometimes to get that sort of advice.

i love the image of being fed through the cage! 6 nights in mid-November, good weather i hope. Any feedback would be great, thank you! We'd like to be close to a commercial area of small stores and shops, not too far from the subway. (For reference, I really like the 3rd arrondissement, esp over the 4th...) I usually wear heels but this will be difficult on cobblestone?!

Check out the apartments in the various barrios of BA on www.bairesapartments.com.ar. I had a wonderful apartment in Recoleta. From the bedroom, I could see train tracks and the river and over to the border of Uruguay.

OK, the first high-rise in Palermo Hollywood (690/week) wasn't available and another unit in same building is over 900 and only 8th floor so we're going back to basics:

Are you locked into the idea of staying in Palermo Hollywood ?

OK... my opinion.. and believe me, I have looked at apts in what seems like the entire city.. before we bought, and I am looking again now- no hurry now, but I like to look :- )

I don't like the Palermo Hollywood apts or the locations that much.
There are the tracks, there are nice areas and cozy little atmospheric streets then there will be down and out blocks..
The area is going through a big renovation/building spurt .. every block seems to have the same looking square block of apts with lots of glass and no character. The views in some are worthless. You might see a tree but you might also see the chop shop across the street.
Then there are some blocks in that area of Palermo where there are wonderful South American homes with the gardens and walls and oozing charm ..

The people that are friends of mine who live in Palermo, live in Palermo Botanico... residential, safe, shops , cafes, Subte station, you can walk to Recoleta ( we did it today) and the gardens are wonderful..
We went to the Japanese Gardens today- please go when you are here, it is just so beautiful and serene and you have to see the Koi. They are almost as big as my dog .. Pup is big. really.

Mid - November is great ! It won't be too hot and the nights will be cool and comfortable.

** Some friends from the States were here for 3 months and they rented in a high rise ( 25th floor) in Palermo .. around Bulnes and Cervino .. the buildings are mostly special because they are so high but new and very very clean and good security. But the views... the apts feel like they are all glass, they are on the corner of the bldg so it is a wrap around view in a few of the rooms.. wonderful. just in case you decide to move closer to that area..**

thanks scarlett -- so Palermo Soho is also not your fav area? My friends are staying in the Hollywood area and yes -- I noticed that there seems to be much construction in the area.

So I now may move more towards downtown.... thanks for your help. For the Bulnes/Cervino bldg in Palermo -- there are shops and cafes within a block or two?

No, I like Soho... better for shopping and some restaurants but that is just a matter of taste.
We stayed in Recoleta when we visited and ended up liking this part of town to live in also.
Bulnes/Cervino .. there might be restaurants on Every corner :) with cafes and bakeries in between.. it is a bustling lovely neighborhood.
You will pretty much find shops and cafes on every block in the city. With bakeries and produce markets and kioskos that sell phone cards and chewing gum and soda.. I don't think that is an issue at all here.. except for Barrio Parque but you won't be staying there lol...

OK -- I'm going to the Soho area.... Your influence is legendary....lol.

I need to research again now - interestingly, Soho is often cheaper than Hollywood. Isn't that odd?

I will look for your friends' apt Bulnes/Cervino - do u happen to recall which agency they used?

The best apts are quickly disappearing for our dates!
